Garval’s will upon setting us in a public and violent world, onto a series of spaces where a soothing private space doesn’t exist is a knocker. The last years he has developed a series of strong scenes about collective behaviors where he emphasizes the idea of animal group behavior through minimizing and composing figures with the intention to reflect the grotesque, which doesn’t agree with the idea of “good manners”. Furthermore, his characters reflect the same sociological study of the individual and not the necessity of showing his own intimate, personal tragedy. In his paintings, the smooth finishes and gradual transitions at body level give way to the impulsive brush strokes with an expressionist feel to them. The artist brakes with the notion of normal taste (noble gestures, continuous flow of movements and harmonic tension of the anatomy), for he is interested in removing masks, evaluating moral values and refer to doctrine not as imitating life anymore, but as its translator. His activity is intellectual more than mechanical and that is why it tears, breaks down and tortures.
