400;\">Stonehouse\u2019s art is resolutely humanist. His subjects are despairing and freakish characters cast from a motley pool. They often appear beaten down, broken, and drained of their humanity. Many of their visages bear a resemblance to Stonehouse the artist as everyman. Most bear their lot with saintly and dignified comportment, or at least quiet resignation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As in a dream, the narratives of his work suggest the mythical view through the lens of everyday life. Such big issues as life and death, love and loss, culture and politics mingle with the mundane details of everyday life; snatches of conversation heard, glimpsed moments of personal lives of others, advertising, media, work and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fred Stonehouse was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1960; he graduated in 1982 with a degree in Arts from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, WI. He has taught advanced painting and drawing, now is assistant professor at the same university. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He began exhibiting publicly in 1982. Ten years later, he was honored with his first solo exhibition in The Madison Art Center (Wisconsin), and the show traveled to the Chicago Cultural Center. His work has been seen in a solo show context with regularity in Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York for more than fifteen years.
