Víctor Hugo Pérez’s painting references popular imagery (crafts, martyrdom, hagiography). In his work, a vast fable is created where human and animal protagonism alternate. The artist alone sustains phrases full of sarcasm and irony between love, eroticism, and literature.

His mixed media works on paper reflect a monstrosity of the spirit; this introduces a postmodernist twist à la Jean-Michel Basquiat into the work of the artist from Guadalajara, while also nodding to the narrative of Catholic ex-votos. All the similarities, influences, quotations, or paraphrases detected in Víctor Hugo’s production, in relation to historical figures or trends in visual art (Van Gogh, Matisse, Picasso, Beckmann, Dubuffet, Orozco, Tamayo), are, according to his own words, tributes motivated by the painter’s fascinated gaze upon the works that have attracted him over time.
